Relax gazing across rolling fields of corn, wheat and soybeans or leisurely stroll through antique shops and enjoy lunch or dinner in one of our many restaurants. Visit our growing community for a day or a night and enjoy our enchanting blend of past and present. We have four themed tours offered on alternating Thursdays and a variety of events throughout the year. Driving Tour of Historical Harrisonville First stop is the Rock Ford One-Room School Living History Classroom. Here you enter a restored 1876 Cass County one-room school which preserves and brings to life the rural school experience. Next, the guide narrates as you drive past 15 historic sites and buildings including two on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the 1897 Courthouse Square Historic District. Homes include the 1847 Mockbee Home, site of a fight between a local Union officer and Cole Younger in 1861; a unique 1867 octagonal home; and spectacular Victorian homes. Included is the Prince Whipple School, the only remaining African-American School in Cass County. The tour culminates with a visit to the 1835 Sharp-Hopper Log Cabin. Original handhewn oak, walnut, maple, and elm logs fit perfectly in dove-tailed corner joints to form this two-room cabin. Hear the stories of several generations who raised families and survived the raids of Kansas Jayhawkers and Redlegs, grasshopper plagues, droughts and depressions. For tour arrangements and fees call: | Harrisonville Civil War Tour Other Civil War sites in Harrisonville include the 1847 Mockbee home where Cole Younger and Union officer Irvin Walley got into a fight which led to Cole taking to the bush to ride with Quantrill. A short ride northwest of Harrisonville takes you to the 1850 Robert A. Brown home which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Slave quarters remain behind the home as this was a working plantation with over 40 slaves and various out-buildings. Returning to Harrisonville you travel close to the site of the Battle of the Barley Farm which occurred in July of 1861. The last stop is at an 1835 log cabin where you will hear stories of how Order No. 11 affected citizens in Cass County where the guerilla war terrorized entire families. Rock Ford School Living History You will hear tales of events that took place at the school from a resident who attended the school in the 1940s. A former one-room school teacher will lead classes which take you back to school days of the past. Reminisce about spelling bees, box-suppers, Christmas programs and recess games. Also visit the unique courtyard made of bricks in the shape of Cass County with special bricks to mark the site of each of the original 126 oneroom school districts. Other structures include the pony barn and coal shed which sat next to the school. For tour arrangements and fees call: | Farm to Food Tour Join us on an enlightening tour of farms of today and learn a bit about farming of yesteryear as well. Walk up and touch the crops in the field and learn about the process of bringing grains to the market and eventually to your home. The use of technology in today's farm machinery will amaze you. Computers have greatly impacted the farming industry just as they have many other areas of our lives. Tour a meat business and learn how meat is prepared from the farm for sale directly to the consumer. This unique business features many Missouri products ranging from pasta and popcorn to wine and cheese. In addition, enjoy a meal of Missouri-grown meats and products.
