On the Santa Fe Trail near the historic Independence Square, the original Santa Fe Glass Company was started in 1958. In 1986, Dan and Nancy Donovan purchased the company, a full-service glass shop serving commercial, residential and automotive needs—providing customers with everything from everything from shower doors and mirrors, to windshield repairs and complete storefront glass installations. “I became interested in this type of business while working in the motor pool in the Air Force,” Dan said. Indeed, he must have been doing something right, because after just five years, he started to expand. He purchased Harrisonville Glass for his second location in 1991, and opened in Odessa in 1995. By 2000, the Independence store was handing so much business from Lee’s Summit that a store was added there. In 2004, Santa Fe Glass expanded into Kansas, with the opening of a store in Lenexa. Another location, in Gladstone, is due to open next year. There are 42 employees company-wide (8 in Harrisonville). “We have great managers at all our locations that run daily operations,” Dan said. To continue the tradition of being family owned and operated for over 40 years, son Justin works at the Harrisonville location, son Ryan is at the Lee’s Summit store and nephew Don at the Independence location. A daughter, Deanna, is a teacher in the Shawnee Mission school district. Dan finds his greatest business challenge today in dealing with insurance and workers compensation costs—obstacles he works hard to overcome by actively promoting workplace safety and providing affordable health coverage. “Customer safety and satisfaction are our primary goals,” Dan said.
