October 2006 Business of the Month
Harrisonville Tractor Co., Inc.
2606 Rock Haven Road
380-5021

It’s the place to find the big, green machines that make little boys grin. (Big boys too, for that matter).  Harrisonville Tractor Company brings to our area a full range of agricultural and consumer equipment as well as commercial worksite products. In addition, they also deal in parts and service, and operate six in-field service trucks. The company also sells lawn equipment under the name of Lawn & Garden Center of Harrisonville.

Harrisonville Tractor Company was incorporated in 1976 when Mike Pozniak and Tom Donohoe purchased the Ford dealership. The company continued to sell the Ford New Holland product until 2003. They became a GMC truck dealer in 1982 and sold that franchise to RZ Motors in 1990. John Deere was added to the product line in 2002 after a local dealership change. In 2002, the company added Clinton Farm & Lawn as an additional location in Clinton, Missouri.

The company has over 60 full-time employees. “We have a very good group of loyal employees that work well together. Our current average length of employment is nine years. We are proud of our employees and their commitment to our customers as well as the work that many of them are involved in within their communities,” said manager Perry Shelton.

Perry grew up in rural Cass County and most of his family was involved in farming. “I was hired in 1976 to assist my brother who was working in the parts department at Harrisonville Tractor Company. I have enjoyed getting to know many of our farmer customers over the past 28 years,” he said. The Sheltons have lived in Harrisonville since 1988. Teen sons Brady and Collin both attend school here. “We feel Harrisonville is a great community to raise our children in.”   The family are members of the Church of Christ in Grandview.

Perry finds that one of the company’s of our biggest challenges is finding qualified employees. One solution they have found is to sponsor students in training programs tailored to the farm industry. “These programs vary in length from 18 to 48 months and typically produce very good employees,” Perry said.

Perry finds great value for his company in being a HACC member.  “Being a chamber member allows us to have another resource for business information and another means for our voice to be heard as part of the business community. I also enjoy reading about other businesses in the monthly newsletter,” Perry said.
