Each day can be a new beginning to a healthier, happier quality of life as adults dealing with behavioral problems and/or mental illness find specialized programs, support and compassionate care at ABC Health Care. ABC was started in 1970 as a geriatric facility by Barbara Clark, MD and Evelyn Benner, RN. Alma Brown was the cook, and the three women ran ABC by themselves. The facility has changed hands several times since then, and due to the increased need for behavioral placements, ABC changed the clientele they served. Now a part of Deaconess Long Term Care, ABC utilizes the services of a house psychiatrist who works closely with Director of Nursing Deona Harrelson and her staff to deliver the best in resident care. Medicaid and Medicare certified, ABC delivers physical, occupational and speech therapy to patients. “This really is a homelike environment,” said Administrator Michelle Leipham. “Many of our residents do not have families, and our staff treat them as if they are their family members.” Indeed, ABC’s staff of 45 individuals provide quality, compassionate care for their residents while recognizing each resident as an individual with their own specific personality and needs. “Due to the public perception of our clientele, community involvement is our greatest challenge,” Leipham said. “It means a lot to be recognized by the Chamber in this way, to help increase our public awareness.”
